From reclaiming our inner sovereignty to manifesting our wildest imaginings — this is the year we stop talking about that brave new world.
We create it.
Here are the six major astrological events that you need to know about in 2023.
1. Mars retrograde ends
January 12th, 2023
By now, we’re all familiar with the internet’s double-entendres, analysis paralysis, and scattershot social media posts for clicks and clout. This three-ring circus of chaos has its positive side sometimes, such as when Twitter’s revised blue check policy led to a swell of impersonator accounts that hilariously undermined corporate giants (including Elon Musk himself). Mars found itself in hyper-trickster mode while retrograde in Gemini, disrupting capitalism and corporate monopolies. We love to see it.
Still, if cyberspace has felt especially prickly these last months, relief is in sight for our overloaded neural networks. Mars stations direct in Gemini on January 12th, when at least some of the online dumpster fires will be extinguished. Mars is the planet we associate with confrontation. As its retrograde ends, consider the ways you’ve encountered frustration, impatience, and anger around communication. Rage is an uncomfortable feeling for many, but it reveals where our boundaries and limits have been crossed. As we work to advocate for our needs, that’s incredibly valuable information.
Mars will remain in Gemini until March 25th. That’s seven months in total, a long time for a planet that usually spends two months in each sign. As our planet of action starts gathering momentum in the first quarter of year, reflect on what you have witnessed about your anger, and the ways you’ve learned to assert yourself. Remember there’s no rush to figure this all out. Mars will take its time gaining speed, and so should you.
2. Saturn enters Pisces
March 7th, 2023
Saturn is the planet associated with discipline, commitment, structure, and resilience. After 2.5 years of Saturn at home in Aquarius, 2023 brings a sea-change. The cosmic ruler-maker trades its Aquarian lab coat for Pisces’ flippers and scuba mask on March 7th.
For the past six years, Saturn has traveled through the two signs that it rules — Capricorn (late 2017 to 2020) and Aquarius (2020 to 2023). While there, the planet of boundaries was empowered to do what it does best: set rules and restrictions. In Pisces, Saturn will build foundations a little differently.
Pisces is mutable water, so the way Saturn works with structure in this sign will be more elastic and fluid than we’ve experienced for a long time. There will be more room for change and adaptability. The ideological containers that became too rigid in Aquarius will morph into jellyfish. More responsive systems will take their place. Surrender and compassion will be our wisest teachers.
3. Pluto enters Aquarius
March 23rd, 2023
Pluto is the planet associated with wealth, power, secrets, mystery, death, and underworld journeys. When it enters Aquarius on March 23rd, Pluto will carry those themes into the realm of information technology, data, science, systems of power, and communal potency.
The last time Pluto passed through Aquarius was from 1777 to 1797, a period that witnessed both the French and American revolutions. Pluto in this systems-minded air sign will transform our understanding of the power of the collective. We’ll witness the value — and cost — of information, and maybe even attempt democratizing it in a whole new way.
Pluto is a transformer. Whatever house Pluto tunnels into for you will be the source of awe-inspiring resources over the coming years. If Saturn in Aquarius clarified the challenges that now face the collective, Pluto reveals what needs to be revamped — on a personal and social level. Pluto will only linger in Aquarius for three months in 2023, but it will spend two decades in this sign when it returns in 2024. Think of this initial sprint as the foreshadowing of seismic shifts to come.
4. Jupiter enters Taurus
May 16th, 2023
Jupiter is the planet of expansion, abundance, wisdom, and luck. In Aries, where Jupiter journeyed from May 10th to October 27th, 2022, and where it passed through again from December 20th, 2022 to May 16th, 2023, Jupiter has had a wildfire mentality. It goes big and doesn’t always worry about getting home. This is a bring-your-own-self-restraint type of astrology — and you may have felt reluctant to do so.
Jupiter will trade its ram fleece for a pair of bull horns on May 16th, when it enters Taurus. Jupiter in Taurus is verdant. Abundant. Extravagant. It’s a strawberry vine heavy with fruit. After speeding through several fiery enthusiasms while Jupiter was in Aries, you may be ready to settle on one or two of these dreams. You’ll want to sink into their fertile soil and cultivate something lasting. Jupiter in Taurus favors the sort of sustainable growth that participates in a reciprocal exchange with the planet. But it’s also capable of greed and hoarding. It depends on how you work with it.
5. Lunar Nodes enter Aries and Libra
July 17th, 2023
This year, one eclipse story ends and another begins as the lunar nodes, which are part of what cause eclipses, enter Aries and Libra. The North Node, mythologized as the head of a hungry dragon, will enter Aries on July 17th. Exactly opposite the North Node, the South Node (the tail of that dragon) will enter Libra at the same time. In 2023, we will witness the final eclipses in the signs Taurus and Scorpio and the first eclipses in Aries and Libra.
This new story shifts focus to the balance between our solo drives vs. our interpersonal relationships. Extreme self-interest meets the sword of justice as we attempt to find a middle path between brave pioneering and consideration for others.
6. Venus retrograde in Leo
July 22nd – September 3rd, 2023
The Venus retrograde from July 22nd to September 3rd will happen in Leo — a sign associated with creativity, self-expression, and flair. A sign that’s, well, a little extra. Don’t be alarmed if your usual channels of inspiration and vitality feel clogged around this time. Retrogrades signal a turning-in. They’re fruitful periods for reflection and review, but not so generative for traditional notions of “moving forward.”
It could be harder to access your sovereignty or signature shine during this stint. The relationships or art forms that used to bring sparkle to your life may feel underwhelming. This could be temporary, or it could hasten your evolution as a creator, performer, and lover. On the other side of this journey, the people and projects that amplify your shine will be obvious. You’ll inch closer to what it means for you to love and create in a way that honors the deepest and most honest parts of you.
