Mars. The Warrior. The Heroine. The Fighter. The heat of the moment. The sword that severs. The never had a F to give.
Mars suffers no fools and makes a mess for those that do. Mars is a snarl, a curled lip and the instinct to strike. Mars is strife. Mars is a battle cry. Without Mars, we wouldn’t survive life. Without Mars, there would be no edge to awaken the senses, no edge encouraging us to rally our courage.
Mars creates conflict. Conflicts reveals our wisdom. They reveal our strengths. They reveal our weaknesses. Conflict can push us past what is comfortable and towards what we need to develop within ourselves.
Mars moves us. Mars is energy. Red, hot, untamed energy. Mars is drive. Mars is passion. Mars makes us aware of our desires. Our desire to be an individual. Our desires to do what we want. Our desires are dangerous if we deny them. They demand entrance into our life. Desires are not arbitrary. Desires are road maps that lead us toward our potential.
This week Mars stations retrograde. It will be so for the better part of 11 weeks (April 17th-June 29th). This will give us ample opportunity to examine our relationship to all things Mars. Our anger, our drive, our determination, our desire. Mars retrograde can be a time that is better used refining our relationship to it rather than trying to take large leaps in the world.
Mars begins its retrograde in Sagittarius. Sagittarius has a wide stride. The fire sign is famous for putting adventure before reason and faith in what’s possible before what’s been proven. Saturn is also occupying Sagittarius. When both Saturn and Mars are together in a sign, especially when one is stationing retrograde, there is a little more wicked in the wobble and the ways of these two. We might assume a little stop and go, a little push and pull, a little frustration in the fields while the energy appears to go underground.
Mars will eventually backtrack into Scorpio, one of its home signs, in late May. Mars in Scorpio is stealth, secretive, seductive and more prudent in its display of power than Mars in Sagittarius. More on than later…
Mars will be in either Sagittarius or Scorpio for the first 9 months of 2016, which makes these two signs, and the places that they occupy in our charts, of great significance. You horoscopes outline how and why.
As a secondary note, this week Mercury, now in Taurus, moves through an extremely helpful grand trine with Jupiter and Pluto as well as making a sextile to Neptune, all as it enters the shadow of its next retrograde. Mercury won’t station retrograde until the last day of April, but it will stay in the range of assistance from these three, making this week a fantastic one to get writing, communicating and creating projects done.
*Horoscopes are meant to be read as inspiration. If you know your rising sign, please read it. Reading your rising sign gives you a more specific understanding as to how the astrology is landing in your personal chart. That does not mean that the rising sign is how you should identify or that it is more important than your sun sign. If you don’t know your rising sign, read your sun sign. If you know both your rising sign and sun sign, please read both. They both contain important information. You’ll know which resonates more for you from week to week. This Mars retrograde will deepen your connection to yourself if you use the transit to learn more about what is important to you and why, especially as it relates to what you are learning, teaching and transpiring. There is a major emphasis on self-development and the search for personal meaning that permeates your chart.
Desires are little fires that were lit within us long before we got here, fires that point to what is possible for each of us. They are the blueprints of our potential. The following is a suggestion of an affirmation that you can use this week and as often as you like for the next 11 weeks to come.
May I find within myself the courage to seek as I need to. To seek out the most important questions to sit with. To seek out the most sincere sources of self reflection. To seek to know myself honestly and with great understanding.
May I use my fears as fuel. Fuel to discover what I am capable of. Fuel to stick with the journey no matter the mountains I may need to climb. Fuel to complete the process so that I feel a sweet release. May I make it my business to know myself, my beliefs and my purpose. May I feel like I have permission from myself to be myself. May I feel like I have permission from my life to live it to the fullest. May I feel like I have permission from every kind of higher power that there may be, to live fully and gloriously.
May I find the swerves and curves and dips in the road I travel interesting. May I approach my path with great curiosity, humor and a hope that won’t quit. May I feel emboldened, when pitstops prevent me from moving at the speed that I most wish to, to take the opportunity to get to know my surroundings better and may I trust that every part of the journey is an important one, even when it is unexpectedly re-routed. May I remember that I am along for the ride, but not in control of the entire course of my travel. May I remember to indulge in and marvel at the mystery of my life.
Taurus & Taurus Rising
This week Mars stations retrograde. It’s the beginning of an 11-week foray into the heart of your intimate life, the fears that you have when facing others and the greatest strengths that you have to pull from when you do. Mars begins its retrograde in the depths of your 8th house of shared resources, loss, letting go and giving your will over to what is. Being considerate of what parts of yourself you wish to share and when to share them are your keys to this week’s portion of Mars retrograde. Being with others honestly demands that we are honest with ourselves as well. Keep bringing the focus back to yourself whenever you feel lost in the energy of another.
Mars will end up back in your 7th house of intimate relationships by late May. This Mars retrograde will most likely bring you important lessons in how to better understand what drives you to move towards certain relationships, what desires tend to derail your efforts in other areas of your life and which put you closer in touch with the good stuff.
Desires are little fires that were lit within us long before we got here, fires that point to what is possible for each of us. They are the blueprints of our potential. The following is a suggestion of an affirmation that you can use this week and as often as you like for the next 11 weeks to come.
May I have the courage to see myself. May I remember to look for myself in every situation, in every room I walk into and on every date I decide to take. May I see myself. As Beloved. As Cherished. As a Perfect Partner for my life.
May I have the courage to consider what I need out of relationships before I sign any contracts. May I have the courage to pause before I say yes to anyone. May I have the desire to check in with myself. May I have the ability to consider myself in every sense of the word.
May I allow release. May I enjoy the process of composting stuck energy, releasing the pain of old losses so that they might live another life. I trust that what I let go of will come back to me if it needs to. I trust that everything I refuse to control will work out better because I have let go.
Gemini & Gemini Rising
This week Mars stations retrograde, beginning its journey in your intensely intimate 7th house of committed relationships. This time will most likely bring you important lessons in how to better understand what drives you to shack up with potential mates, commit to certain business partners and how to work for and with certain clients.
It’s the beginning of an 11-week foray into the heart of this house, revealing the hidden corners of your heart. Mars tends to make a mess and part of what you’ll be cleaning up here is in regards to how you deal with conflict, deal with difference and deal with the reality of being a person in all the partnerships that you are in.
Nothing teaches us more about our hearts than situations that stretch those bloody muscles beyond recognition, and nothing does that quite like being a bumbling, fumbling mess of a human. Try not to judge the relationship issues that arise and, instead, tend to them with a compassionate curiosity knowing that the look of them will shift once Mars has.
Mars will end up back in your 6th house of employment, work and health by late May helping you to pay attention to any mayhem that needs cleaning up in your work life and employment situation. It will also highlight what you most desire to do on the daily.
Desires are little fires that were lit within us long before we got here, fires that point to what is possible for each of us. They are the blueprints of our potential. The following is a suggestion of an affirmation that you can use this week and as often as you like for the next 11 weeks to come.
May I make the most of the interpersonal messes I might find myself in. May I remember not to take myself too seriously in an argument. May I remember that fighting can sometimes be about finding my boundaries and learning about another’s. May I not recoil from the more intense interactions with loved ones and instead use the opportunity to stretch my commitment to truth and tolerance. May I remember that every interaction with another, no matter the flavor, is an exercise in self-acceptance and self-knowledge because the more I know about myself the less conflicted I am in moments of unease, the clearer I am and the kinder I am.
May I take the time to review my work, to make sure it is something I am proud to put out into the world. May I have the courage to fight for what I deserve in my work life. May I have the courage to seek out a way to do my work that helps me to feel on purpose and on fire.
Cancer & Cancer Rising
This week Mars stations retrograde. It’s the beginning of an 11-week foray into the heart of what drives your business, what makes you want to get out of bed in the morning, and what kind of life you can and do create for yourself on a daily basis. Mars runs your career and creative centers, when it goes retrograde, it’s time to get to know these aspects of self more intimately.
Mars begins its retrograde in your 6th house of your employers, your employees and how you run things (and how when you don’t run things, they run you). This Mars retrograde may be asking you what you’d like to run if you could. The 6th house also speaks to the attention, exercise and nutrients that your body needs in order to do all that you need to. This Mars retrograde will most likely illustrate what stops you, how you need to look after your body and why or how you may tend to overwork yourself.
Some of us overwork to prove our self worth. Some of us overwork to make up for what we feel we lack. Some of us overwork because we are too afraid of what might happen if we don’t. Get to know your why’s and how’s here so that you can do your work for reasons that are clean, clear and correct.
By late May, Mars moves back into your 5th house. This is the house that speaks to your creative and erotic energy, your artistic children (and our human ones if we have them) and your ability to self-express. This phase of the Mars retrograde will help you to open up to this aspect of yourself, your desires and your needs in creative and romantic pleasures.
Desires are little fires that were lit within us long before we got here, fires that point to what is possible for each of us. They are the blueprints of our potential. The following is a suggestion of an affirmation that you can use this week and as often as you like for the next 11 weeks to come.
May I come to appreciate myself for the honest efforts I put into all I work on. May I know when enough is enough. May I be patient while my work is in its own process. May I be patient as my work unfolds and finds its way on its own. May I love myself no matter what I accomplish. May loving myself be my greatest accomplishment. May my work speak to this. May my work be infused with this. May my work speak for itself.
May I find the time to take care of my physical being to the best of my ability. May my health be a high priority. May my body receive the message that it is allowed to be as it needs to be.
May I be open to exploring new and old desires and may I find the courage that I might need to allow myself to do so. May I remember to have fun, to feel like I have the right to enjoy myself, like i have the right to play for no other reason than fun and frivolity. May I not miss my life because I am too busy answering the ceaseless call of work. May I remember to put it down when I can and find out who I am without it as well as because of it.
Leo & Leo Rising
This week Mars stations retrograde. It’s the beginning of an 11-week foray into the heart of what you want to do with your creative energy. It’s an 11 week excursion into unlocking some of the energy that gets stuck when you get tripped up in the stories from your past. It’s an 11-week opportunity to get to know what you love more intimately.
Mars begins its retrograde in your 5th house of play, pleasure and self-expression. Weighty questions around how you want to use your creative energy, what you are driven to bring into being and what wants to be created through you, give your life an anchor to work with.
But not necessarily an answer.
You’ll have to wander through the badlands of self-doubt first. You’ll have to reconnect with the reality of what you are choosing to do with your energy. You’ll come to know that as you take an honest look at what you want to and are willing to try to create, you get clearer about your reasons for it. Creation depends on that kind of clarity. As you take the time to get clear so too will what you are wanting to make real.
By late May, Mars moves back into your 4th house of home, family, parents and foundations. It will give you the opportunity to view what you have come from through a different lens. It will give you the opportunity to rebuild your base. It will give you the opportunity to repair and restructure what you need from the foundation of your life. It will help you to remember what you desire most at home, and which hearth fires keep your heart happy.
Desires are little fires that were lit within us long before we got here, fires that point to what is possible for each of us. They are the blueprints of our potential. For more information how Mars operates in your natal chart, and what it says about how you might make yourself miserable, how you deal with conflict and how to find the courage to channel that energy towards your passion, drive and potential, join me for an 11-week journey through Mars Retrograde.
The following is a suggestion of an affirmation that you can use this week and as often as you like for the next 11 weeks to come.
May I remember that every heart-felt desire that is placed within me, every desire that I truly feel I was meant to make manifest, is one that has the right to exist. Every desire that lives in me that is aligned with my purpose has the ability to be realized. Every desire that refuses to let me go is a pointer, directing me towards what I need to follow.
May I remember that every creation has a consequence and when I take part in creating something I also take part in caring for it and being accountable for the outcome of it. May I be willing to be a part of the entire process.
May I feel at home. May I know that I have a place in this world. May I have the courage to create a space for myself. May I have the wherewithal to claim a space for myself. May I have the maturity to enjoy the entire process. May I find a place to rest, reflect and feel comfortable.
Virgo & Virgo Rising
This week Mars stations retrograde in your 4th house of home, family, parents and foundations. It’s the beginning of an 11-week foray into the heart of what holds you down, what holds you back and what holds you while you are here. Mars is stationing retrograde in your private life, your childhood memories and the spaces where your ancestors dwell.
This is a deep well that Mars digs.
It’s a time to hunker down and sort out your inner life. What happens internally is likely to be far more interesting than the other situations that call for your attention. There is a possibility to dig out a deeply planted thorn. There is the possibility to heal from the misdirected rage that came your way. There is the possibility to better understand the kind of position your parents were in, weren’t in and are in now. Understanding brings us the possibility of great healing and that is what is possible for you on the deepest of levels, if you can find the courage to stay present to your pain, especially when it is so old you barely remember its origin.
By late May, Mars moves back into your 3rd house of communication and the busy plans that fill your days. Mars will be emboldened here to tell it like it is. It will encourage you to ask for what you need and will most likely make you want more clear and concise communication as you review your usual ways of navigating conflict. It will encourage you to speak about what you desire most.
Desires are little fires that were lit within us long before we got here, fires that point to what is possible for each of us. They are the blueprints of our potential. The following is a suggestion of an affirmation that you can use this week and as often as you like for the next 11 weeks to come.
May I find my way back home. May I find peace with my past. May I heal from the wounds inflicted by those that weren’t wise enough to do better. May there be healing in my family. May my ancestors feel this healing. May my entire bloodline be free from suffering. May my bloodline know peace. May my people know justice and be a part of creating it for themselves and those they love. May the family I create be a generative force of love, healing and hope for our community. May we do our people proud and may our blessings flow out into the world for all who need them.
May I find a way to speak my truth. May I feel solid in the telling of it. May I feel confident in my ability to say the things that need to be said when they need to be said.
Libra & Libra Rising
This week Mars stations retrograde in your 3rd house of communication, local travel and siblings (or the good friends that feel like siblings). The 3rd house takes us out into the world during our day. It’s all the daily dealings we do, going to and from the many places we might visit. Mars stationing retrograde here may make some of those movements a little less efficient at first. It might have you rerouted. It might have you reconsidering how you want to move through your days.
Mars stationing retrograde here might make some of your communications a little more tangled, heated and hot to trot. This transit will certainly tease out the most telling components of your communications. This transit won’t let you back down from conversations just because they are difficult, tired or trying. All the ways in which we communicate are important to witness. This transit wants you to make yourself heard by first hearing yourself.
By late May, Mars moves back into your 2nd house of finances, money-making projects and the kinds of goals that you might have for pursuing your passion and making a living at it. Mars aims to reconnect us all to our desires, our drives and the decisions we make about them.
Desires are little fires that were lit within us long before we got here, fires that point to what is possible for each of us. They are the blueprints of our potential. The following is a suggestion of an affirmation that you can use this week and as often as you like for the next 11 weeks to come.
May I feel heard. May I feel listened to. May I feel like what I say is important, even when I don’t get it “right”. May I hear myself. May I feel free to voice my opinions. May I feel the songs in me that wish to be sung and may I sing them freely. May I feel free to make sound. May I feel free to make up my mind and change when I have good reason to. May I feel like my mind is my own.
May I use my talents to support myself. May my passion pave the way for abundance to flow freely into my life. May I feel the sacred sources of my desire. May I do all that is in my power to develop my relationship with them. May I honor my desires. May I support my desires and be supported by them.
Scorpio & Scorpio Rising
You are under the influence. This week your ruling planet, Mars, stations retrograde. It’s akin to your Uber driver going in the opposite direction of your destination and not giving a F that you are upset about it. Presently, it’s not really about the plans that you want to make. You are just along for the ride so you might as well sit back, relax and see what the scenery has to offer.
This is the beginning of an 11-week journey for you. Mars will begin its retrograde in your 2nd house of how you make money, the assets that you have and how you feel about them. There are big lessons here for you. Especially around sustainability. Can you keep doing what you are doing? Is it viable long-term? Is it paying the bills? This isn’t the time to jump ship and start swimming up-stream with something new if you can help it, but it is the time to take into consideration what direction you actually want to move in regarding the ways in which you make the money that you do. In times of need, in times of confusion, in times of significant retrogrades, it is extremely important to take life one step at a time. How you react to the shift in direction determines what you learn during the process, and the goal of this journey is what you can learn from it.
By late May, Mars will be back in your sign. Back on its home turf. Back in black. Mars will be able to help you retrieve the lost parts of yourself. It will help you to make sense of your identity, help you to make sense of your situation, help you to put yourself together in a way that has you feeling your power, feeling your desires and feeling yourself.
Desires are little fires that were lit within us long before we got here, fires that point to what is possible for each of us. They are the blueprints of our potential. The following is a suggestion of an affirmation that you can use this week and as often as you like for the next 11 weeks to come.
May I trust the process. May I trust my instincts. May I trust that I will be supported. May I have the courage to advocate for myself. May I have the courage to advocate for what I deserve. May I have the courage to advocate for what I want. May I trust that any desire placed deep within me is one worthy of my attention, my energy and my advocacy.
May I trust the process of my own becoming. May I give myself the tools that I need in order to find my stride and strut my stuff. May I remember that transformation is not a pretty process. May I remember that transformation doesn’t have to be pleasant to be on target. May I remember that my way of doing things need not match up to anyone’s schedule, timetable or calendar. My rhythm is my own. My tempo is as important as my heartbeat. My way of finding my way is to listen to my life and respond accordingly with great compassion and accountability.

May I feel like I am in relationship with the powerful and potent energy of creation. May I enjoy the process of learning more about that relationship. May I honor the mysterious way in which my life unfolds. May I be pleasantly surprised at all the ways in which my life works out when I am as diligent about my work as I am observant about the way it comes to be.
Capricorn & Capricorn Rising
This week Mars stations retrograde in your 12th house. The 12th house is a place of great energy, energy that easily gets misused, mishandled and can be misleading. The 12th house requires that we go within, that we go away, that we go MIA for a moment. I suggest that you do so with no guilt. I suggest that you give yourself the permission to please the part of you that needs a little time to itself. I suggest that you tell your inner warrior that it can take leave and find the sources of healing that it needs in order to regain its strength and recoup its energy.
The 12th house can have us feeling lost. The 12th house can have us feeling untethered from our everyday routines. The 12th house can have us wandering around the wilderness discovering all kinds of creatures that teach us untold amounts about ourselves.
The 12th house is a place where we can get a lot done, but it is out of everyday sight. It is work that is done in private, in secret, in solitude sometimes. Be bold and trust what you are getting done regardless of public recognition.
By late May, Mars moves back into your 11th house of friends, community and mutual fortune. It will be a clearer, more easily articulated experience. It will help you to locate your shifting role amongst your peers, your friends and your social scenes. It will remind you of the pleasures of being in your power while being with the group. It will illustrate the desires that you have to serve the folks you most wish to work with.

The following is a suggestion of an affirmation that you can use this week and as often as you like for the next 11 weeks to come.
May I make friends with the parts of myself I don’t fully understand. May I appreciate what I am learning about the ways in which I use my energy. May I be open to repurposing my self-destructive patterns. May I be willing to let go of my outdated ambitions and instead be interested in what presently preoccupies my days and what excites my unfolding desires. May I be willing to change. May I be accepting of the version of myself that I am becoming. May I be curious about my own judgments around accomplishment and striving for acceptance. May I truly, madly, deeply accept myself as I am in this moment.
May I show up for others as I am called to do. May I take up the social causes that call me. May I be willing to be a leader in whatever situation I find myself in, while staying connected to my sense of self. May I give myself the choice to show up authentically or not at all.
Aquarius & Aquarius Rising
This week Mars takes a hold of your hopes, your dreams and your visions for the future. Stationing retrograde in your 11th house of what you wish for yourself and your community, this Mars retrograde will impact how you show up for friends, especially when it’s not so easy to. This part of the Mars retrograde will teach you important aspects of what it means to be a leader in your community, in your field and to those in your social circle that may need you to be. It will teach you about your desire to be a part of the group and your discomfort with it. It will teach you about which versions of your hopes and dreams are worth fighting for and which need a complete revision. It will teach you about who is actually on your side, who is able to see your ideas through, who is your road-dog-ally, and who is just along for the scenic parts of the drive.
By late May, Mars moves back into your 10th house of your career. Here it examines the projects that you want to construct, the desires that drive these great visions and the will that you have to work with to get it all done. It takes a great amount of willingness to work to make our mark on the world. It takes a great amount of faith in ourselves and our abilities to go for what we want. You don’t have to have that faith before you begin, but you do have to want to have it and be willing to develop it as you do your skills and your ability to keep showing up.

May I learn how to keep it moving when I learn that I can’t get what I need from a person or a group. May I keep seeking out those that know what I am about and those that are in hot pursuit of what is most important to them. May I have the courage to make myself known to all whom I hold in great regard and high esteem.
May I see the visions that I have for my career as imprints from my soul. May I know that my desire to to good in the world is among the most noble of desires to have. May I follow those desires like they were my one true love, ever patient, willing and working on ways to prove my devotion to them.

This week Mars stations retrograde in your 10th house of what you want to do when you grow up. Careers are containers that we can pour ourselves into. Every hope. Every frustration. Every ounce of energy. Careers are portals of self-exploration. They help us to understand the aspects of ourselves that have no other home. A good career choice should be one that can help us to make sense of ourselves and that hopefully has room for most, if not all, of ourselves.
This part of the Mars retrograde cycle calls into question your commitment to what you are wanting to do and what you are doing in the world. Mars might do so by slowing down what you have started, but remember that this is only a temporary shift in tempo, one that might be here only to test you. Like a child would. Like a lover would. Like your life would were it a person. Meet these tests with your devotion. Meet these tests with your courage. Meet these tests with any strength that you can muster. Again. And again. And again. Be in it for the lang haul. Call on your creativity to keep finding new ways to be a warrior for your work in the world. Keep proving to yourself that you are willing to work at this thing that you know is yours to work on.
By late May, Mars will move back into your 9th house. This is a place in our chart that gets us out into the world, gets us to expand our ideas of it and gets us to see ourselves and our life through a larger lens. In short, the 9th house is the spiritual experience of seeing the vastness of existence. This part of the Mars retrograde cycle will see to it that you have the opportunity to reorient yourself to what is important, what real power might feel like and what means the most to you. It will show you the spiritual nature of your desires and have you wanting to deepen your exploration of them.
May I allow myself the luxury of seeing my work as a sacred vessel for my self development. May I know that every single time I show up for my work I am showing up for myself. May I focus on each of my efforts instead of their immediate outcomes. May I remember that the results of my efforts are not up to me. May I trust that my work will get to the people that need it the most. May I develop the capacity to keep myself from falling into the traps of self-doubt and fear and instead develop a healthy curiosity for what works and what doesn’t. May I trust in my ability to follow what in my work has energy. May I remember that following where the energy of my career takes me is more important than following some external textbook. May I trust my inner guide. May I trust my instincts.
May I allow myself to see my life through a wide lens. May I remember that this is about far more than just my little life. May I remember that my place in this Universe is of the greatest importance and at the same time is one in a bazillion. May I remember that life is long and impermanent. May I remember to live each moment with as much consciousness as I possibly can.
