June 26th
Mars stations retrograde at 9° of Aquarius
One of the most important transits of the year, Mars’s station retrograde is a siren sounding. A sword raised. A red flag waving.
Mars is the Warrior. The blade. The battle. Every 2+ years, the red planet pivots, appearing to move backwards through the skies, edging closer towards the earth than any other part of its cycle, revealing to us all manner of both our power and our rage. The last time Mars was retrograde was the spring/summer of 2016. With a certain dictator-in-training running for office, campaigning on undiluted and unabashed racism, xenophobia, sexism, ableism, and every other evil known to human kind, the last Mars retrograde made real our issues. With the Brexit referendum, largely fueled by the same sentiments of superiority and separation that has kept one of the largest profiters of colonization afloat for centuries, the last Mars retrograde certainly helped to set the stage for what we are experiencing now.
The cycles of Mars dig up the issues that lie just under the surface of our personal and collective selves. Humans are addicted to the illusion of separation. We fall for it constantly. We need boundaries. We need to separate ourselves from harm, neglect, and what feels unsatisfactory, but we are not separate from the fate of others. We are bound, relentlessly so, to one another. Harm to one is harm to the whole. Mars teaches us this, but usually through tough-love lessons.
Mamma Mars isn’t here to placate us.
Polite fades fast when in the presence of this planet. Teeth bared, Mars growls, snarls, and salivates at the thought of tearing into the falsehoods it is presented with. It wants what is raw. Real. Without restraint. Mars rules Aries and Scorpio.
Obviously.
In general, Mars retrograde can be especially poignant for folks with sun, moon, or rising in Aries or Scorpio, but none of us are spared looking at the issues it digs up. This retrograde reveals to us our own anger and the energy it takes to repress it, the destruction it creates when left unconscious, and the un-lived potential that lies in wait when we don’t engage in, and fight for, our passions.
Mars will be retrograde from June 26th to August 27th. However, retrogrades don’t start the moment that the planet changes direction. The “shadow phase” of a retrograde refers to the moment that the planet in question enters the degrees it will eventually retrograde back over, and the degrees it has to clear before it can find new ground after it has stationed direct. This gives us a more holistic understanding of the transit. With this perspective we can see that the impact of this transit is of a much larger scope than just the dates of its actual retrograde.
Astrology works in waves, always.
Mars entered its retrograde shadow on May 12th, and will leave it on October 8th. Featured very prominently in the Aquarius eclipse on July 27th, Mars retrograde will be impacting the entirety of eclipse season (July and August). Beginning the journey at 9° of Aquarius, Mars will eventually retrograde back to 28° of Capricorn. Shedding its red light over these two signs for much of 2018, the meaning of Mars in each place is important to understand.
As Mars stations retrograde in Aquarius, it reveals the social structures that rely too heavily on consensus. Aquarius considers the whole of humanity, the systems we build and live within, and the ways in which we might innovate them. As Mars stirs the liquid of the Water Bearer’s vessels, it reveals the issues that poison the wells our societies sips from. Here Mars will ask us to reclaim our power from the pressures of social acceptability and respectability, reminding us of the importance of doing and thinking for ourselves.
Eventually receding into Capricorn, Mars will dig into the issues of control, repression, and denial that the structures we live within facilitate. It will ask us what the cost of our submission is and reveal the rewards of disrupting what is corrupt.
To understand how this transit is impacting you specifically, please join me for A Journey Through Mars Retrograde. In this course, we will unpack both the meaning of this transit for you as well as the meaning of your natal Mars (the Mars in your birth chart). It’s an incredibly rich time to be learning about all things to do with this energy, including understanding the mark this planet has made and does make on your life. Being such a difficult planet, understanding how our Mars functions in our chart, and in the sky, can be incredibly liberating. When we understand what pains us, we can position ourselves with greater awareness so that when the toughest issues poke and prod us, we know how to work with them.
June 27th
Sun in Cancer opposing Saturn in Capricorn, both at 5°
Full moon at 6° of Capricorn at 9:53 PM PT
As the sun comes into an opposition with Saturn, luna conjuncts it, creating a full moon with incredible consequences.
Happening on the heels of Mars stationing retrograde, this full moon brings with it a heaviness, a weight, a confirmation of all that we are responsible for. With this kind of illumination we are schooled on the unfriendly ideologies of rejection, futility, frustration, self-doubt, limits, and authoritarianism.
But so too are we reminded of what Mastery takes and can make of us.
If Saturn teaches us anything, it is the importance of developing an incredible amount of patience along with a consistent and steady effort without regard for rewards or awards. It’s a planet that may know little exuberance, but it is the Ancient One who knows how to honor time and accept life on its own terms. Gazing unflinchingly, but not without a hard-won humor, into the inevitable end we all face, Saturn teaches us how to live in light of death. By honoring the efforts it takes to accomplish something, it is Saturn that teaches us how to channel our energy.
This full moon is serious, and wants us to be as well. As the sun in tender, loving, family-oriented Cancer, comes up to a standoff with Saturn, what is further illuminated is the unconscionable evils that are occurring to families along the man-made, colonially invented, Southern borders of the United States. Saturn can be cold, punishing, and cruel.
But we need not facilitate those sentiments.
This full moon is a call to develop the discipline of taking care. It is always in our best interest to construct a world where everyone feels nourished. Where none know the pain of lack of love, food, shelter, or dignity. Where the structures that we live within serve to bring out the potential in each of us.
Personally, this full moon speaks to the work that we have done in the part of our chart that contains Capricorn. Since Saturn’s entrance there 6 months ago, this part of our lives has undergone an extensive reorganization. Desiring our deliberate attention and effort, this full moon conjunct Saturn shows us the consequences of our actions, both helpful and restrictive.
June 28th
Mercury enters Leo
Here for a dramatically long time, Mercury spends the next couple of months in Leo. Stationing retrograde here on July 25th, Mercury’s movements will play an important role in the upcoming eclipse season.
The part of our chart that contains Leo will be under both major review (Mercury retrograde in Leo) and important initiations (August’s solar eclipse in Leo). By July 3rd, Mercury is conjunct the north node and by 7th, Mercury enters its shadow phase, both of which point to a foreshadowing occurring. Communications, travel, and our temperaments are about to get even testier.
July 5th
Sun in Cancer trines Jupiter Rx in Scorpio, both at 13°
An incredibly fortunate signature, Jupiter’s trine to the sun is exuberant, optimistic, and joyful. This aspect is generally good for all kinds of growth and good times. It’s also a spoon full of sugar for the more bitter medicine we are being asked to take at the moment. This water park is here to help keep our hearts open and our feelings flowing. Shutting down only inhibits abundance.
The trine between the sun and Jupiter also means that The Jovial One is about to station direct, and is therefore pulling focus in the sky. Currently ruled by Mars, Jupiter and it are swapping stances, signaling a possibly unforeseen change of events.
Mercury in Leo opposes Mars in Aquarius, both at 8°
This transit complicates our communications and brings us into exchanges that feel harsh, spiteful, or potent in their ability to cut to the truth. Both planets are close to the nodes, signaling the extremes and the long-term issues that we’ll be working on for a while. It’s a very different note than sun trine Jupiter. The mix of soothing and strong emotions may be dramatic.
July 8th
Sun trines Neptune Rx, both at 16°
This dreamy moment is brought to you by recently retrograde Neptune. The sun is in the perfect position to pull the best from both Jupiter and Neptune, helping us expand our ability to care, heal, and imagine ways in which we can make room for more of both in the world.
July 9th
Mercury in Leo square Jupiter in Scorpio, both at 13°
This transit tends to exaggerate whatever is being communicated. It’s great for comedy routines, getting grand with whatever you are communicating, and making big plans, but not so good for accuracy. This astrology can exaggerate any sentiment, so place your bets with a grain of salt.
Venus enters Virgo
Venus will be in Virgo until August 6th. Here the Governess of Good Graces gets picky, critical and incredibly interested how beauty rituals and pleasure practices can be soothing to the nervous system.
The least of our concerns right now, Venus isn’t “strong” in Virgo, but she is incredibly hardworking and efficient. This might not create a much needed antidote of luscious loving to Mars’s retrograde, but it may help us accomplish a great many creative projects or analyze a romantic issue.
July 10th
Jupiter stations direct at 13° of Scorpio
After months of being retrograde, Jupiter makes an about face. Finishing up the last leg of its journey, Jupiter’s trip through Scorpio has been harrowing, exposing patterns of abuse rooted in patriarchal violence, this transit has not held back. The days surrounding Jupiter’s station direct may reveal something important to this ongoing narrative and, in general, will most likely feel like a much needed positive release of energy for us all.
July 11th
Venus in Virgo trines Uranus in Taurus, both at 2°
Venus gets experimental with how connections occur. This is the perfect transit for consensually trying out something new in love, with love, and for your loves.
What needs to be cut out of your life should be done so carefully, consciously and with great consideration.
As Mars stations retrograde, your ruling planet points to the social roles that might be running you ragged or just draining a precious battery you need for other things.
Something in your social life needs to be trimmed, cut back, and considered for the time, energy, and expense it is on your systems. It’s not that anything is necessarily wrong, its just that there are priorities you need to serve and in order to do so you need to recall some aspect of your energy.
Fomo needs to be fought with long-term strategy sessions, vision boards, and remembering that big dreams require many small sacrifices, shifts, and reassessments.
Mars’s movement backwards may spark a desire for greater autonomy or point to the importance of it. What needs to be done by you, and you alone, awaits your attention. This may prove to be a time when you feel a distance, discomfort, or shift occurring in your communal interactions. Disagreements that arise will prove themselves to be important portals for your personal growth and overall development over the next couple of months.
Be patient with the process.

Take your time when parsing through your professional desires
At this stage in the game there is no reason to rush and every reason to take your time. Gather evidence. Study the rhythms. Understand your needs at this point in your life. It’s OK to need something different from your profession. It’s OK that you have different things to give it at this time. Mars stations retrograde in your 9th house of long-term plans, long-distance travel, and the kind of educational or spiritual experiences that change the trajectory of a life.
Your routes forward may look a little different a couple of months from now.
Part of what Mars will dig up and ask you to examine is your reason for moving in the directions that you are. Mars has a way of being abrupt, to the point of being downright rude, when getting to the bottom of a situation. But if you can’t answer questions about why you are on the quest that you are, you may want to second guess it for yourself. Mars will set up situations that poke at your beliefs. Ask you to defend your ideas. Force an argument about what it is you hold to be true. Be wise enough to know when to argue and when to ponder your approach. This planet is hot-headed and heated. Defensiveness is not a valid defense. Thoughtfulness and investigation into our reasons for believing in what we do is our best ally.
The full moon on June 27th illuminates the intense emotions that arise in regards to shared resources. Hearts. Energy. Ideas. Creations. Anything that is shared needs to be done with thoughtfulness and a deep understanding of the expectations that may accompany the agreements that we make. It asks you to understand the ways in which you seek to control situations with others, and how you might loosen your grip just enough to experience a connection much deeper than your current defenses allow.

Mars is asking you to own your part of the process. It makes you take a deeper look at the persistent issues that arise when working with others. Asking you to be more cognizant of what upsets you, aggravates you, has you feeling devalued or worried about how to merge your talent with those you wish to work with.
This process is a deep one, excavating the fears that get in the way of your creative self-expression. Excavating the losses that have yet to be grieved. Excavating the power that heartache made conscious has.
Finding ways to channel, but not dilute, your raw emotional energy will bring both your professional and personal projects a potency few possess.
Your vulnerability is powerful.
The full moon on June 27th impacts your relationships or the folks that you are in relationship with. Where does it get messy? Painful? Wonderful? Boundaries are beautiful but when they isolate us from love, relatedness, or the growth we need to do, they cease to be helpful and instead become a barrier we must break through.
The full moon highlights a time where restrictions on your partners or partnerships are pronounced. A time when you are asked to confront something about your own loneliness. A time when you come to a deeper appreciation for you own solitude. A time where you understand in greater depth how you have constructed your own obstacles to intimacy. This world is set up to separate us and keep us apart. Our sense of isolation isn’t our fault, but getting connected requires that we deconstruct how and why we are in this place.

Sagittarius & Sagittarius Rising
As Mars pivots in the sky, it mirrors the shift of your short-term strategies. It highlights the activities, relationships, or communications that leave you a little inflamed, stressed, or overheated. What might help you soothe your system? What arguments aren’t worth your energy? What might help you to direct your anger towards outlets that are healing in nature? What might be the best use of your passion given your present circumstances?
Since Mars will spend the next month and a half reviewing the ways your days are structured, take note of the outer re-organizing that helps you to feel more internally together. Mars wants you to be more efficient in the end, but immediately it might be a little disruptive to your day-to-day planning, traveling, and communicating. Situate yourself so that you have a little more wiggle room than usual. Some things may be off-beat, but they’ll still be in step with your grand plan. Have patience while the planets are temporarily a little out of order.
The full moon on June 27th is illuminating the balances in your budget. Since December, Saturn has been working its way through your bank accounts taking stock of what you have to work with, what needs time to grow, and what needs to be used before it expires. The full moon articulates the delicate balance of release and cultivation of your resources right now. What you need from others and what you are ready to share is stressed, but also situated in such a way as to be incredibly impactful. Set your sights on the possibly hard to achieve, but ultimately incredibly financially rewarding, partnerships. This full moon is reminding you that they are out there and that not only are you worthy of them, but they would be lucky to work with you.

We know that living our best life means that our own happiness is only half of the equation. We know that living our best life means dedicating ourself to making sure everyone that can’t, can. We know that living our best life means loving what and who we are in spite of systems that seek to capitalize on telling us we can’t, shouldn’t, and couldn’t.
The full moon in Capricorn on June 27th wants you to live your best life, but not a self-obsessed or vapid one.
With growth comes accountability. With awareness comes responsibility. With fulfilling your personal purpose comes the need to address a collective one. This lunation illuminates all that you have been personally pulling together. All that you have been showing up for. All that you have been able to find a way to make work. It’s a heavy celebration. A time of serious play. A moment of reckoning with what you have been able to overcome and make manifest over the past 6 months.
With Mars stationing retrograde the day before the full moon, your personal and professional resources are highlighted. For the next 6 weeks, Mars is digging up the dirt on your finances. Seeking out the honest truths that will eventually tip you over towards a greater clarity about your work. Highlighting the issues here that lead to an inflammation of stress, worry, or irritation. However you earn a living is valid, even if it has nothing to do with where you are eventually wanting to go. The less you judge how you support yourself, the more energy you’ll have for creating what it is you want.

The astrology of the next month is incredibly strong for Water Bearers. It’s potent. Poignant. Powerful. Possibly a little overbearing.
Easy does it.
Like all medicines, this cosmic potion needs to be taken in reasonable doses. This is no time to overdo. Over-exert. Over-stretch. In fact, it’s a time to redirect some aspect of your energy. Notice what happens when some part of your life pulls inwards a little. Notice what happens when you identify and then cut back on unconscious ways you waste your energy. Notice what happens when you take a moment to reflect on your direction.
It’s time to reclaim your energy.
Withdraw from what threatens to burn you out. As Mars settles into its retrograde motion, it tries to school you on all the ways in which your systems are unnecessarily inflamed.
Simplify. Streamline. Say goodbye to excess with full faith that you are making room for something much more fitting for you. You are undergoing an important transformation, one that will span across this next season. You are meant to be a little lighter on the other side of it. This process may ask you to reckon with the trauma, pain, or shame that your body has had to carry. Our bodies keep score and most of us are not winning in the systems we are forced to exist within.
The full moon in Capricorn on June 27th asks you to come to terms with some aspect of your vulnerability. If we have no control over how others treat us, may we at the very least understand how to treat ourselves. May we at the very least learn to make a life in honor of all we have suffered through, lost, and learned about love regardless.
This full moon comments on all of the psychological work that you have been doing behind the scenes since December 2017. This shift of focus inwards is balanced by an equally dramatic expansion outwards. As your career and public roles gain prominence, your inner life beckons you to explore its vast, hidden resources. The two may seem unrelated, but are actually incredible affirming of each other. As you work to uproot and understand the tensions within, you are able to more freely express them in your professional work, creating something truly unique to you and captivating to everyone else.

As Mars stations retrograde in the most mysterious part of your chart, you are asked to dedicate some time and energy to explore your hidden life, self, and projects.
As the Warrior reviews the back rooms of your psyche for the next month and a half, it pulls out the dusty, forgotten boxes that contain mountains of memorabilia from your past. Battles that you fought long ago come to mind. Bearing important messages, these phantoms might alarm before they reveal the helpful hints that they possess. This kind of exploration requires that you use your energy for more inward work. If you feel a little less self-directed than normal, it may be because there is a part of you that needs to retreat.
Psychic spelunking is invisible work, but it is work none-the-less.
The full moon on June 27th balances out this solo trip with a confirmation of the groups that gather round you.
