To be human with any modicum of power creates a predicament. How will we use what we have been granted? Like babies with scissors, we can innocently do tremendous harm with the tools we possess if we don’t understand them.
A new moon in Scorpio* is raw power. A new moon in Scorpio introduces us to ours. A new moon in Scorpio comes with an air of intensity and asks us what we might put the pedal to the metal for. A new moon in Scorpio strips us down and demands that we claim what we are at the core.
Because if we don’t, it is all too easy for the world to hold it against us. Because if we don’t, life has a tendency to talk us out of our dreams. Because if we don’t, we run the risk of never knowing what we came here to become.
The road to self-possession is a bumpy one but one that must be taken nonetheless. The road to self-possession is filled with good intentions that have disastrous impacts. The road to self-possession demands humble diligence and bucket loads of self-forgiveness.
Scorpio destroys to compost, to recreate, to renew. We can’t fix what was never meant to work. There comes a time when we must realize that within a structure of abuse we cannot find love. Inside a system of oppression, we cannot get free. Inside of a gaze that cuts us down we will never see our capacity. Scorpio isn’t here to make nice. Scorpio is here to bring the real deal. Scorpio gets dirty. Scorpio is resilient. Scorpio is here against all odds. Scorpio survives.
But the new moon in Scorpio on Wednesday, November 11th at 9:47 AM PST wants us to thrive.
You see Saturn has spent the last couple of years in Scorpio making us deal with the festering funk that this sign/planet combination can concoct. Saturn has been co-present with the Scorpio new moon since 2012. That’s three new moons in Scorpio with Saturn nearby. Saturn halts, hampers and can hammer us into the ground. That means we’ve had three years of slow to stalled starts in the area of our chart that contains Scorpio. That’s a big deal.
That makes this new moon, unhampered by Saturn, a big fucking deal.
But that is not all. The new moon is receiving a ridiculously tight sextile from Jupiter, the planet that gives gifts of bounty and beauty (basically the opposite of Saturn). Jupiter is in hard-working, dutiful and diligent Virgo**. Jupiter reminds us to inhale. Jupiter in Virgo reminds us of the ethical ways in which we can grow. Jupiter in the mix of this new moon refreshes our ideas, ideals and gives us a new spin on the data we’ve collected. Jupiter always assists us in remembering our gifts. We are never given anything by accident. Every talent, every yearning, every interest that won’t let us rest is a gift. A gift that leads us to our purpose.
Pluto is also connected by a fairly tight sextile to the moon. Pluto is the modern ruler of Scorpio (Mars is the traditional one). Pluto is wealth untapped. Pluto is sources of power and prestige unparalleled. Pluto represents longstanding, far-reaching and extreme changes. Pluto governs psychological complexes and, like a volcano, it holds within it the power to erupt in ways that will send everybody running. Pluto’s role in this new moon is to remind us of the source of power that we are connected to always.
The new moon is also making a tight trine to Chiron and a wider one to Neptune. Mystical healing energies infuse this new moon and it begs for creative and hopeful visions. We need to see it in order to believe it, but seeing it in our mind’s eye is all we need to begin with.
Mars (the ruler of this new moon) is hanging at the last degree of Virgo and sending a sextile ray to the new moon. Mars does fine in this sign, but at the time of the new moon it is sitting with the north node. The north node is an eclipse point. Eclipses occur when light gets obscured. Eclipses create feelings of foreboding. Power and the use of it can stir some pretty demeaning and destructive energies. We see this all the time. We live it often. We who have been abused, neglected, mistreated and trodden on know it all too well. We of The Royally Fucked Over need to unlearn putting up with any reenactment of such abuses and to work at not perpetuating them ourselves.
The last degree of a sign is a volatile one. The last degree isn’t kind or friendly to a planet. The last degree of a sign signifies the danger sometimes associated with leaving a situation.
This new moon is here to teach us that if we want to align our power with our purpose we must work with our power consciously. Giving it away won’t work. Hoping someone else will do it for us won’t get it done. We must work with our power and work towards developing all we have been given because nothing leads us to our purpose quicker than using our power in ways that make the most of what we’ve been gifted.
New moon blessings!

*The moon is in its fall in Scorpio making this moon less powerful on one hand than it would be in say Cancer or Taurus. However, the new moon has to occur in each sign and so while I wouldn’t choose a new moon in Scorpio to initiate something that I could wait on, I will use a new moon in Scorpio because it is the only new moon I’ll ever have in the area of my chart that contains Scorpio.
**Jupiter is in it’s detriment in Virgo which isn’t as powerful as it is in other signs, but Jupiter can only make a sextile to Scorpio in the sign of it’s detriment (Virgo) or its fall (Capricorn). So it’s not the strongest aspect it makes but it is still a sextile from Jupiter and I am going to run with it till I get a touchdown.
